Ariel!

Another double redesign! On your left is the human version. It's actually Melody (Ariel's daughter from Ariel 2.) On your right is Ariel as a kid mermaid.

Let's start with Melody. I am still confused as to why disney felt the need to do child Ariel as a human. Like, we clearly know she wasn't a human ad a kid, that would kind of nullify the entire premise of the movie! So, I did Ariel as a mermaid first. Then I thought, you know, Melody was basically a copy of her mom with different coloring. Why not make her? I darkened her skin tone a tad from the mermaid version. I think a life in land would lend itself to slightly tanned skin, or at least wind exposure would darken her skin a bit. Her dress is a bigger version of Melody's baby dress. Those ruffles though. Wow. Wouldn't want to do those again! Or those sleeves. Those sucked. Took me at least 3-4 days to get them right. (Not straight. Just it was really frustrating. I could see them in my head, they just wouldn't appear for me!) Nope, i have no clue how her bow is staying in her hair. Mermaid magic.

The Ariel version. So apparently, I grew up, and people decided that it was ok to not tell me things (important things!!) about disney anymore. For example, there is a Little Mermaid 3?!? (Also an Aladdin 3?!?) How have I not seen this?? Grrr. Anyway, judging from screen caps, Ariel has always had her miscolored shell bra. (All the rest of her sisters have matching bras and tails! Why not Ariel?) Just when Ariel was younger, the bra was more of a tube top. Since she's a mermaid, I give her a pass. Clothes are pretty hard to swim in. (I really don't recommend you dress your kid up like this though. Waaaay too much skin for young kids IMO.)
I gave her her original gravity defying bangs, because that is character design 101! She's got an identifying trait, keep it!! I also darkened her hair color because the original red looks way too artificial. The movie color screamed red, but in a more natural, non-neon way. Lips are narrowed. (This is definitely a reoccurring theme. Get used to seeing that lol.)

Something I just realized: no mermaid Ariel. No belly button for you. Lol, they're weird to draw anyway.

Disclaimer: I do not own Disney, Disney products or characters, Disney makes decisions that I disagree with, and Disney owns the rights to Jasmine, the official disney princess lineup, and all associated characters, designs, and ideas, no profit is made (how would I make profit off of this??) and absolutely no copyright infringement is intended. If you are from Disney and want to hire me for your design team, please do contact me. I have ideas!! :)

What do you think we'd see if we took off baby Ariel's tail?
